Barbells for Boobs 2015
Barbells for Boobs 2015 is dedicated to Renée Gorevin, one of our very first STCF members. If you know Renée, you know just how amazing a woman she is. Please read her story, in her words, for more information. We love you Renée and will be with you every step of the way:
On October 8, 2015, I was diagnosed with Metastatic Breast Cancer. Metastatic Cancer means cancer cells have traveled from the primary cancer site. In December of 1994, at 37 years old, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, “garden variety,” according to my doctor at the time, and fifteen lymph nodes were removed, none of which had cancer cells present. I went through chemo and treatment. After 21 years of thinking I had beat this, it is back.
In the spring of 2009, at 52 years old, I was thrilled to hear that Tom was opening a new gym – I had wanted to try something new. I am one of the first 25 Charter Members of South Tahoe CrossFit! I worked out at South Tahoe CrossFit for 5 and 1/2 years. This last year, things kept hurting – not sure why, “I’m just getting old,” I told myself. The pain changed all the time; it got better and then it got worse. I hiked 100 miles on the John Muir Trail for two weeks of July/August this year. Then, in the beginning of this September, the pain increased and would not go away. I again went to the doctor and said I needed to rule things out. On September 26, I had a bone scan and on Monday, September 28, I knew there was “something” in most of my bones, most likely cancer. On October 8th, this feeling was confirmed with the test results from a bone biopsy.
I am starting treatment with growth inhibitor medications and will start radiation in a couple of weeks. I wholeheartedly support increased funding and research for breast cancer. The fact that I can be so healthy and athletic and have this happen after 21 years speaks to the urgency of the need for more focus and research on this disease. As I speak right now, I will have several good years ahead of me. I also hold out for a cure – anything can happen.
I will attend Barbells for Boobs and you may use my story to raise more donations It’s unbelievable; it is f@*ked! FYI – I have said the word “F*#k” more times in the last two and a half weeks than I have in the last 5 and 1/2 years at CrossFit.
That’s enough for now. Love you all.
